Traumatic Brain Injuries

Missouri Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyers

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is often caused by a blow or jolt to the head that causes the brain to collide with the skull. Mild TBI might lead to headache or confusion. Severe TBI can result in loss of consciousness, cognitive impairment or even death. If you or someone you love has suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) as a result of the carelessness or negligence of another, contact the St. Louis lawyers of Kolker & Germeroth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.4 million people in the United States sustain Traumatic Brain Injuries annually. Of that number:

  • 500,000 die
  • 235,000 are hospitalized
  • 1.1 million are treated in the emergency department and then released

TBIs result from a variety of causes:

  • Falls are the source of injury in 28 percent of cases. Children under the age of 4 and adults over the age of 75 are disproportionately represented in this figure.
  • Motor vehicle accidents account for 20 percent of TBIs. Auto accidents are also the main cause of TBI-related hospitalizations.
  • Blows to the head, often in sports- or recreation-related accidents, account for 19 percent of TBIs
  • Assault accounts for 11 percent of TBIs. Firearms are the leading cause of TBI-related deaths.

The CDC also estimates that 5.3 million Americans with TBI need help with tasks of daily living. TBI can result in a wide range of changes in thinking, sensation, emotion and language.

When a traumatic brain injury is caused by the carelessness or recklessness of another, the victim may be entitled to compensation for past medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and future medical bills.
